The background

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., Oct. 30 — Ken Calvert, a Republican congressman from Corona, is running against fellow Republican Young Kim of Anaheim for California's 40th Congressional District. Redistricting placed both incumbents in the same newly redrawn seat, which stretches from Orange County into Riverside County. Democratic leaders redrew the district map as part of a wider effort to help their party in the U.S. House, after President Trump pressed Texas to redraw its districts to favor Republicans.

In the June primary, Calvert finished first with 35 percent and Kim had 21 percent. Democrat Esther Kim-Varet placed third with 17 percent. Political experts quoted in coverage say Democratic and independent voters could decide the outcome, and a super PAC backing Calvert has spent more than $6 million. Kim has been asked about gas prices, immigration and the war with Iran in recent interviews.
