The background

EDMONTON, Alta., Oct. 27 — The Red Wings were on a four-game road trip and had lost to the Calgary Flames 4-1 before this game. Coach Todd McLellan spoke about the team's special-teams struggles after that loss.

The team announced its decision to start Postava on Monday. Detroit had been without John Gibson in net for this matchup, and the choice opened the door for the rookie. Postava is a young goalie with one period of prior NHL experience, one source notes, and the game was played in Edmonton against the Oilers, led by Connor McDavid.
