The story behind it

Aikman has long said he wants to work in an NFL front office. Last year he became a consultant to the Miami Dolphins while still working for ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcasts. In March he spoke about the Cowboys' lack of interest in using his services.

One source reports that Joe Buck, his longtime broadcast partner, signed a six-year extension with ESPN in May. The deal was kept quiet, and Aikman was reportedly not told about it, which left him upset, according to one report. This has not been confirmed by the other sources.

The background

DALLAS, Oct. 24 — Troy Aikman, the Hall of Fame quarterback, has called NFL games for ESPN since 2022. Reports this week say his time with the network is moving toward an end at the close of the NFL season. Aikman has said he wants a role in an NFL front office.

Last year Aikman became a consultant to the Miami Dolphins while still working on Monday Night Football. In an interview, he was asked whether he would meet Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner and general manager, for a meal. He said he would have lunch, breakfast or dinner with Jones any time Jones wanted. Headlines from other outlets say Aikman is open to a Cowboys front-office role and that Joe Buck's broadcast future is also in question.
