How does the Premier League schedule work?

The Premier League is the top professional men's football (soccer) league in England. Its clubs play matches in rounds called matchdays, and the schedule lists which teams meet, when, and on what channel. Standings are kept in a table ranked by points.

Why it's in the news

Manchester United are set to play Bournemouth in a Premier League match, with Liverpool hosting Brighton in the same round of fixtures. Pressure on Manchester United and manager Michael Carrick has grown this season.

Background

The Premier League is the top division of English men's professional football. Clubs play each other in fixtures, which are arranged into matchdays. Games are spread across weekends and some weekday evenings, and the full list of fixtures is published as the season's schedule. Each club's results add points to a league table, which is the standings that show who is leading and who is at the bottom.

Several sources list the current 2026-27 season. A headline from one outlet describes a table for the 2026-27 season with the latest standings. Another headline describes live updates for a round that includes Manchester United against Bournemouth, with Liverpool hosting Brighton. A third headline gives details on where to watch Chelsea against Tottenham, including the TV channel, live stream and start time. These sources give only the headlines, so no scores, dates or times beyond these are stated here.

The matches are in the news because Manchester United are due to face Bournemouth in a Premier League match. A BBC columnist described United as poor all season, pointed to criticism of manager Michael Carrick after a comment from Bruno Fernandes, and tipped Bournemouth to win. The same columnist wrote that a defeat could end Carrick's time in charge. That is one writer's opinion and not a confirmed outcome.
