What is the Rivian R2: Rivian's smaller SUV, first delivered June 2026

The Rivian R2 is a battery-electric SUV built by Rivian Automotive, the American electric vehicle maker. It is a smaller, less costly sibling to Rivian's R1S luxury SUV and seats five people in two rows. Its first customer deliveries began in June.

Why it's in the news

Rivian reported third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, Oct. 29, showing that the R2 has become its top-selling vehicle. The report also lifted its 2026 delivery forecast and sent its shares up in after-hours trading.

Background

Rivian said the R2 became its best-selling model by volume in the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026. The company delivered a record 19,248 vehicles from July through September, and it said the R2 accounted for much of the gain over the previous quarter. Rivian does not report deliveries by model, so the R2's exact count is not public.

Rivian expects the R2 to reach a positive gross margin by the end of 2026. Its R2 production plan is 160,000 units, and CEO RJ Scaringe has said the company must scale beyond that level to reach overall profitability. Rivian reported revenue of $2.155 billion for the quarter, up 38 percent, and a net loss of $913 million, compared with $1.17 billion a year earlier.

The stock closed at $11.45 on the day of the report, down 1.9 percent after touching a 52-week low of $11.38, and it rose about 7 percent in after-hours trading. Rivian raised its 2026 delivery forecast to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles, up from at least 65,000. Commentators noted the shares are still down about 42 percent this year and questioned how much the R2 contributes to profit.
