NEW YORK, Oct. 28 — AMC Kips Bay 15, a 15-screen theater at 570 Second Avenue in Manhattan, has operated since 2006 and is a local landmark. The property was bought last year by NYU Langone, a major health care system. AMC announced in August that the sale would likely lead to the theater's closure at the end of this year. Residents and nearby businesses protested, and Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal backed keeping a movie theater, supermarket and housing in the neighborhood.

Adam Aron wrote that the building's owner had ended AMC's lease in anticipation of a transfer to the hospital. He said AMC had offered NYU Langone several alternatives, including a smaller theater, and that none had been accepted. The theater, which the company says is among the most attended in the country, will shut for good on Jan. 3.
