The background

Broadcom, the chipmaker ticker AVGO, has pulled together a $63 billion funding package to help pay for chips that AI company Anthropic uses in its data centers. Bank of America, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley helped arrange the deal, according to people familiar with it, and Blackstone is committing $9 billion. Under the structure described, a special purpose company borrows the money, buys the equipment and leases it to Anthropic, and the lease payments repay the debt.

Of the total, about $42 billion is senior secured debt, which gives lenders the first claim on the company's assets. Broadcom is providing residual value support, a financial backstop, for that portion. Bankers plan to sell up to about $21 billion of high-grade bonds, which will probably mature in around five years. The timing and final size depend on market conditions. Broadcom's representatives declined to comment.

What happens next

Banks are expected to submit further commitments to join the group in the coming days, and the bond sale is expected as soon as early next year.
