Cancer is trending because Pope Leo XIV, who had surgery for lung cancer on Oct. 13, was cleared by the Vatican on Monday to make a 12-day trip to South America. A Vatican official called his cancer diagnosis a "gamechanger" for the papacy, according to headlines from Reuters and AP.

The background

VATICAN CITY, Oct. 28 — Doctors removed the lower lobe of Pope Leo's right lung on Oct. 13 after finding a malignant tumor. The cancer was a type called lung adenocarcinoma, and it was found by chance during a routine abdominal exam, doctors said. The operation went well with no complications, and he went home on Oct. 17.

On Monday the Vatican said there were no medical reasons to stop him from taking his planned trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The 71-year-old pope will visit 10 cities and board 14 flights. Peru's Cuzco sits above 11,000 feet, and its thin air could be hard on someone recovering from lung surgery, but it remains on the schedule. Leo, the first American-born pope, spent more than two decades as a missionary and bishop in Peru.

What happens next

The South American trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru is set for Nov. 6 to 17.
