The background

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo., Oct. 29 — Kaden Matsuda, 19, of Ridgway, Colo., and Jackson Donlon, 20, of New York, left the Leadville campus of Colorado Mountain College on Friday. They planned to hike and camp near Ice Mountain, a nearly 14,000-foot peak that requires technical climbing. They were expected back by Sunday, and the college reported them missing on Monday morning.

Searchers found the students' vehicle at a nearby trailhead and a collapsed tent under heavy snow. Officials then widened the search around West Apostle Mountain, which they said fit the students' plans better. About 60 searchers used helicopters, drones, dogs and beacon technology. Sheriff Andy Rohrich of Chaffee County said the men were found in a basin of the mountain, and that investigators do not suspect foul play. Recovery was delayed by gusty winds, and more snow was expected later in the week.
