New poll gives Becerra 61% to Hilton's 34% in California governor race

Xavier Becerra is trending after a new poll on Oct. 30, 2026 showed him leading the California governor's race by 61% to 34% over Republican Steve Hilton. The poll also found Becerra would be the state's first elected Latino governor.
The story behind it
Becerra, a Democrat, has served as a U.S. Health and Human Services secretary, a congressman and the state attorney general, the Los Angeles Times reported in its poll coverage. Hilton, his opponent, is a former Fox News commentator. Both candidates have been campaigning on affordability, with Hilton holding a $3-per-gallon gasoline giveaway in Sanger on Thursday, Oct. 29.
The background
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 27 — The Los Angeles Times and UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies released a poll that put Democrat Xavier Becerra well ahead of Republican Steve Hilton among likely California voters. The survey found 61% backing Becerra and 34% backing Hilton. That is a slight gain for Becerra from a September survey that showed him ahead by 25 percentage points.
The poll also showed voters' priorities shifting. In this survey, 40% of likely voters named pushing back against the Trump administration as a top priority, while 34% named reducing the cost of living. In mid-September, cost of living led with 44%. Pollster Mark DiCamillo tied the change to federal actions that irritate Democrats, including immigration raids and the federal effort to find illegal voting in California elections.
